Chess Ratings

This is for the curious and those who might want to play rated tournaments at some point.

The official over-the- board (OTB) chess rating system in England is organised by the English Chess Federation (ECF) -link below.

You have to be a member of the ECF to get a rating or to enter tournaments that are rated.

All rated tournaments will have been registered with the ECF. They can include long games (classical time controls) or shorter time controls (rapid or blitz). You will have a different rating for each time control you play.

Tournaments can be found on the calendar on the ECF website.

Club championships can be officially rated if they are registered.

ECF online ratings are also possible for ECF members and there is a dedicated webpage for this. They organise online tournaments on a weekly basis:- link below.

DO NOT automatically sign up to the ECF – it is not necessary and of no benefit unless and until you decide to play an official tournament.

For info:- the ECF page for Whitby shows how ratings are published - linked below.
